Steering Rack

The steering rack is an essential component of every car's steering system. It is one of the critical parts that help the driver to control the vehicle's direction of travel. The rack connects the steering wheel to the wheels and helps to transfer the input from the driver's hands to the tires. Steering Rack Components

The steering rack is a long metal bar that sits between the front wheels and runs longitudinally along the underside of the car. The rack has a gear teeth attached to it, which mesh with a pinion gear located on the end of the steering column. The pinion gear is turned by the driver as they turn the steering wheel. The rack's movement is directly proportional to the steering input, meaning that a large turn of the steering wheel will cause a correspondingly large turn of the wheels.

At each end of the steering rack, there is a tie rod. The tie rods are screwed onto the end of the steering rack and are connected to the steering knuckles, which hold the wheels in place. The tie rods are what actually move the wheels, based on the input received from the rack.

There are two types of steering racks: manual and power steering. Manual steering racks are connected directly to the steering column, while power steering racks are connected with a power steering pump and hydraulic fluid. With power steering, the fluid provides additional force to the movement of the rack, making it easier for the driver to turn the wheel.
